Kot District
Kot District (Pashto: کوټ) is a district in northern Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.[1][2] Primarily Pashto-speaking, the district is notable for its demographic composition and the security challenges it faced during the mid-2010s.[1]
Geography and Administration
Kot District is situated in the north-western part of Nangarhar Province.[1] The district center lies at coordinates 34.1532° N, 70.5953° E, with an elevation of approximately 920 metres (3,018 ft).[2] The district encompasses several localities and settlements, including Sī Pīā, Doshah, Laghar Juy, Anār Khēl, and Shamir.[2]
Demographics and Language
The population of Kot District was recorded at 205,423 in 2006.[1] The district is primarily Pashto-speaking.[1] The principal tribe in the area is the Momand, which is also known by the name Maramkhel.[1]
Conflict and Security
From 2015 into the first half of 2016, the Islamic State (ISIS) established a significant presence in Kot District, leading to clashes with Afghan security forces.[1] In July 2016, Afghan troops launched an offensive against the group, which resulted in ISIS militants being pushed out of the district and the destruction of their training camps.[1]
Infrastructure and Economy
The district contains various facilities and landmarks, including the Shadal Health Clinic and the Mlayee baba hadera cemetery.[2] Transportation links include the bus station connecting Rodat to Jalalabad.[2] Religious infrastructure includes the sultan musque Mosque, and healthcare services are supported by Rdat Hospital.[2]
